Superbueno’s energetic 52-seat space was designed to emulate the vibrancy of the streets of Mexico City and the urban sophistication of New York. Geometric design elements reference mid-century Mexican architecture; a striking terrazzo bar top with pops of pink, peach, and yellow commands attention; and colorful Luchador masks and works by emerging Mexican artists accent the white-washed brick and plastered walls.

The logo and brand collateral for this corner spot in the East Village of NYC was inspired by the hand-painted "rotulo" street signs of Mexico, and every piece of collateral evokes the playfulness and energy of the bar’s ethos and interior design.

Mace is a spice-based cocktail bar located in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. Mixed-tone metals, reflective surfaces, warm wood table-tops and soft natural greens identify the dimly-lit atmosphere. The zinc-clad bar top gains a natural patina with each service, with a distressed mercury mirror behind the backbar providing an industrial texture. A trellis-patterned wallpaper accents the walls beneath silk ferns, ivy and tropical plants. For an added brand experience, the bathroom walls are lined with a deep textured pandan wallpaper, a signature herb represented on the cocktail menu.

The printed menu was inspired by botanical field guides. Each cocktail is marked by an illustration for the herb which inspired the drink, with a small chart noting flavor profile, preparation, spice origin and glassware.

The second location of Mace Cocktail Bar sat on 12th St near Avenue A, and spanned 2 rooms. One side had the main bar, while the other had dining seating a service bar. The main challenge was in unifying these two rooms conceptually and making both sides equally desirable seating. A huge soffit protruded from the wall in the East room, which I panneled with diagonal tongue-and-groove wood in a natural stain to add warmth and a graphic detail to the predominantly monochromatic palette. The vast store-front windows were trimmed with delicate paneling to invoke the feeling of Victorian tea and spice shops. Natural curated plants hugged these windows and a botanical wallpaper engulfed the small passageway between spaces, serving as rich green accents for the herbal concept of the brand.

The Cabinet Mezcal Bar is tucked in the far East Village of Manhattan, turning 2 small storefronts into a cocktail bar on one side, and tasting room and events space on the other. Teal-green walls, glossy blacks and gold-veined brick saturate the space to feel vaguely Victorian meets American Frontier. Rustic wood table tops add warmth and texture, and cinnamon diamond-tufted leather upholstery drew inspiration from stagecoach seating. Personalized elements come through with mixed frames of portraits and images that hint at the history of the U.S. and Mexico and the production of mezcal and tequila, or “liquid gold.”

Miracle is a Christmas-themed pop-up cocktail bar that serves holiday cocktails in a festive setting with nostalgic holiday décor, professionally-developed cocktails and branded barware. What began as a festive way to utilize a space under construction turned into a global franchise with branding and product development led by myself and the Cocktail Kingdom design team. Miracle began in 2014 and continues to expand each year.

Design direction includes creation of franchise branding guides, menu design, website development, photography, recipe manual, social media assets, barware, glassware, ceramic mugs, product packaging, and additional partner collateral such as business cards, framed posters, retail signs, tablecloths, coasters and gift bags.

Inspired by the owners’ Midwestern origins and the bar’s appeal as a neighborhood hangout for bartenders, the logo’s casual script evokes schoolhouse nostalgia. A muted palette of brown and orange are warm, inviting and familiar. A nod to the space’s literary collection, a cloth-bound narrow menu feels like a trusty handbook, with a stamped logo and crossbar that trails off the edge of the cover, leading the guest to look inside.

Potions of the Caribbean: 500 Years of Tropical Drinks and the People Behind Them by Jeff “Beachbum” Berry strains five centuries of fascinating history through a cocktail shaker, serving up 77 vintage Caribbean drink recipes — 16 of them “lost” recipes that have never before been published anywhere in any form, and another 19 that have never been published in book form.

When Beachbum Berry’s Sippin’ Safari was first published in 2007, it ignited a global Tiki drink revival by revealing 69 top-secret recipes of Tiki’s midcentury golden age, and the stories of the people behind them. This 10th Anniversary edition adds another 14 never-before-published classic cocktails to the mix, plus a 26-page preface detailing how the Bum discovered, decoded, and divulged the book’s long-lost recipes.
